Philip John Prentice - Chartered Building Surveyor

Philip is a Chartered Building Surveyor and was elected Professional Associate on 11 November 1992.

He entered the construction industry in 1976 serving an apprenticeship with the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell whilst attending Warley College of Technology as a part-time student obtaining both Ordinary and Advanced City & Guilds in Carpentry and Joinery. He continued to study and later obtained an Ordinary and Higher National Certificate in Building Studies.  He was then employed by the Property Services Agency (Part of the Department of the Environment) and a Professional and Technology Office – Building & Civil Engineering but left to join Redditch Borough Council as a Building Control Officer whilst completing a part-time degree in Building Surveying. He graduated in 1991 and joined Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council and a Building Surveyor and following qualification as a Chartered Building Surveyor joined the Estates Department of the University of Birmingham.  He then worked as a Chartered Building Surveyor in private practice with Phoenix Beard, Harris Lamb, Wakemans and Watts & Partners before joining Graham E Thompson & Co. Ltd. in 2009.

Before qualifying as a Chartered Building Surveyor, he was involved with the construction, adaptation, modernisation and maintenance of a wide range of public buildings and houses and later in the construction of large commercial buildings, retail buildings, housing estates and domestic building work. This time also included an involvement with the care and maintenance of both private and public buildings of all ages and of wide and varied forms of construction. During his 16 years or so in private practice he has specialised in the inspection and surveying of new and existing buildings. On new buildings this has taken the form of monitoring of construction projects and on existing buildings this has been with the preparation of schedules of dilapidations, schedules of condition and advising on defects and the repair and maintenance of a wide range of buildings.  This has involved the inspection of a wide range of commercial buildings, factories, warehouses, offices, shopping centres, houses, residential estates, single shops and office blocks.  He has also been involved in the preparation of drawings, specifications and acted as Contract Administrator with regard to the repair, refurbishment, alteration and extension of a wide range of commercial buildings. He has also acted in the role of Employers Agent for the Construction the construction of new commercial and industrial buildings along with fulfilling the role of CDM Co-ordinator on a number of small and medium sized projects.  More recently he has been appointed by a number of parties as Party Wall Surveyor (sometimes jointly as agreed surveyor) on a number of commercial and domestic schemes.

Philip has used his expertise on a number of occasions in preparing specialist experts reports relating to construction, building defects and dilapidations claims. He has advised in a number of disputes that have all, so far, been successfully resolved without the matter coming to trial.

Philiphas been involved with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors for a number of years sitting as an assessor on a great number of Assessment of Professional Competence panels and has recently been asked to consider becoming Chairman of the panel.
